It was refreshing to see your web page. My husband has been offered employment in Karratha W.A. He is a lic. painter and must find his own accom. The cheapest we can find is $700 p/w the next cheapest is $1100 for 1 b/r unit ouch!! It is not fly in fly out(you must pay your own flights.) We have our home in Qld. which payments must be made ($356 p/w). Our son will look after our home on weekends, should I get employment in W>A apart from that it will be empty. So what if any allowance would he be entitled to? I am also looking at moving to Karratha for work in roughly six weeks. Can you clarify if we meet the LAFHA. Cheers Di Shallis

MT2030, paragraph 4 describe "The exempt accommodation component is so much of the allowance as it is reasonable to conclude is in the nature of compensation for additional expenses on accommodation that the employee could reasonably be expected to incur". That means if an employee could prove that he/she paid more in rent after moving to Australia than the difference between the expenditure in home country and at temporary resident are exempt accommodation component. Its easy for the people to prove who were renting overseas and had some kind of lease agreement but what about the people who sold their home and moved temporarily with an intention to move back. ATO is not clear at all and leaving the things unclear to get them trapped. Can you please shed more light on this issue?

Great news for Accountants here.
Motor vehicles and FBT was fun before the budget. Now - even more so.
The flat 20% kilometre will be simpler when it arrives, that is if it does - may have had change of Government by then and who knows what then. Now with the phasing in period we'll have even more questions to ask and explanations to give our clients while working hard to stay profitable and keep our clients compliance costs down.
Superannuation and excess contributions didn't get the expected relief - perhaps the Treasurer feels if people can afford to pay extra to super they can afford the penalty taxes - even for mistakes in timing of payments.
Clients with Trusts need to plan for the additional distributions adult beneficiaries may receive now that the $3333 to minors has been taken away. This could open the doors for us to start 2012 tax planning now. It's a thought.
Thanks for the great Budget summary.
